The dog days of summer have arrived! Today's forecast calls for hot temperatures nationwide, with some chances of showers and thunderstorms.
A stationary front will be draped over the Gulf Coast and Southeast today. Slow-moving showers and thunderstorms will be found along the Gulf Coast and Southeast coast as a result. Rain and thunderstorms will be more widespread across the Florida Peninsula due to both the front and the sea breeze.
Soggy, stormy weather will also be found across the Plains, Great Lakes, Midwest and Ohio Valley. A decaying storm system will move across the Great Lakes during the morning. Another round of rain showers and thunderstorms are then likely for the central Plains, Mid-Mississippi Valley, Midwest and Ohio Valley in the afternoon and evening as a cold front marches south and east.
With both rounds of thunderstorms in the north-central U.S., there will be the chance for severe weather. The main concern within thunderstorms would be damaging winds and large hail. However, a few isolated tornadoes also cannot be ruled out. Heavy rain and localized flooding will also be possible, especially across the Midwest.
A monsoon-like pattern continues across the Four Corners states today. Showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast during the afternoon and evening, with the best chance occurring in Arizona. A few showers and thunderstorms are also possible along the Sierra Nevada into southeastern California.
Otherwise, high pressure will control the weather across the rest of the West. Expect dry weather for most of California into the Northwest, Great Basin and northern/central Rockies. It should also stay quiet in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
Unseasonably hot weather will bake most of the U.S. Highs will mainly reach the 70s and 80s for the Northern Tier, though a few 90s will be possible. Most of the southern half of the nation will experience upper 80s, 90s and 100s. The Desert Southwest and parts of the southern Plains will report several temperatures in the 110s! The tallest peaks of the Mountain West will be the place to head to if you’re looking to cool down, with the mercury only climbing into the 60s.
